MySpace Launches SilverLight And Windows Mobile Apps

March 31, 2009 08:20 by gemery

It seems Microsoft will work to keep Windows Mobile relevant by creating a series of partnerships around social networks.

Following news of Microsoft developing a Facebook application, MySpace just announced that it will bring its Open Platform to Windows Mobile phones. The new MySpace mobile application for Windows Mobile will be built on top of Microsoft’s Silverlight platform. In addition, MySpace also announced its MySpace Silverlight SDK, which will make it easier for developers to build OpenSocial applications using Silverlight.

Also In a blog post today, Microsoft Developer Evangelist Michael Scherotter reveals that MySpace will now support Silverlight in its developer platform.  Developers will now be able to create Silverlight applications on MySpace’s OpenSocial based platform.  According to the blog post:

  1. MySpace has just announced support for Silverlight on MySpace’s Open Platform.  Take a look at their new page about Silverlight support.
  2. On Thursday, April 2, MySpace and Microsoft will jointly release a kit on the CodePlex Open Source site (with the MS-PL License) that will make it easy for developers using Visual Studio and designers using Expression Blend to create Silverlight applications on MySpace’s OpenSocial-based developer platform.
  3. Along with Max Newbould, Development Manager for OpenSocial on MySpace, I will be giving a presentation at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco on Thursday, April 2 at 1:30 PM on this Silverlight Kit for MySpace.  The kit should be available on CodePlex at the conclusion of the session.

According to Microsoft, the company will also release a kit on April 2 that will allow developers to use Visual Studio and Expression Blend to create OpenSocial-based applications.

Windows mobile is really stepping it up! It will really get interesting if myspace changes its huge video service to use silver light.

Silverlight to stream presidential Inauguration

January 17, 2009 09:45 by gemery

Microsoft's Silverlight technology has been chosen to stream U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's swearing-in ceremony live on the Presidential Inaugural Committee's Web site. The PIC will also stream video of an event with Obama and Biden in Baltimore on Saturday as part of their "Whistle Stop Tour," which will take them from Philadelphia to Washington for the inaugural ceremony and celebrations.

As part of its effort to hold the most open and accessible inauguration in history, on Saturday, Jan. 17, the PIC will also stream video of a Baltimore event on the Whistle Stop Tour that will take President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden to Washington, D.C., from Philadelphia, Microsoft said on Jan. 16.

“Microsoft is proud to be part of this event by helping to bring the inauguration activities online,” said Brad Smith, Microsoft general counsel. “Just as during the campaign itself, Internet technology is enabling people around the world to participate more directly in historic events in new and exciting ways.”

In August the 2008 Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) used Microsoft Silverlight to stream convention proceedings, including President-elect Obama’s acceptance speech.

“Microsoft Silverlight was built to enable people to consume online content in unique and engaging ways,” said Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president of the .NET Developer Division at Microsoft. “This will be a truly historic event, and we are honored to enable online viewers to participate and create really meaningful experiences.”

The swearing-in ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. ET on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Take a look at the rest of the scheduled events for Inaugural Weekend.

I have heard about this for awhile now but I could never figure out how to get this thing to switch over to silver light. Today though I found the semi-hidden link that you need to invoke the silver light experience. It’s the default experience for the Mac but you need to activate it to get it to work on PC
