Program the iPhone with .net/Microsoft programming Languages

September 15, 2009 11:40 by Geoffrey Emery

... from the Brave ProgrammerNovell today released MonoTouch 1.0, a tool designed to let programmers who use Microsoft's .NET Framework develop applications for the popular iPhone and iPod devices. MonoTouch is the first tool to come from the Mono Project targeted at a mobile platform.

The Mono Project is an effort organized by Novell to bring .NET and Windows-centric development languages and platforms to Linux, Unix, Macintosh and other operating environments.

Miguel de Icaza, founder of the Mono Project and a Novell VP, said the decision to develop MonoTouch came from a campaign by .NET developers seeking an alternative tool to develop for the iPhone.

"We were bombarded with requests," We are seeing a lot of iPhones work their way into the enterprise yet the number of people willing to make the commitment to bring in people with Objective-C skills is low," said Joseph Hill, a Novell product manager.

So what does this mean to you? It means that “hopefully” yet again those c# and vb skill set will enable you to program the iphone..

More to come on this for sure!

Scan Bar codes and get Local Results with your Windows Mobile phone and Shop Savvy

In a nut shell you can scan the barcode of any product with your camera. Then you can use the software to find the cheapest local price. So cool. You can also make the product search the web for more prices.

Shopsavvy for Windows Mobile should be coming within the next few weeks, and in the mean time Big in Japan has released some screen shots of the app in action.

The software looks pretty good, and interestingly seem to carry the Sliding Panels theme of the Windows Mobile 6.5 today screen forward into the program itself, something which Microsoft may want to consider then re-doing its Settings application.

Qik Updates Windows Mobile Client

April 16, 2009 09:48 by gemery

Qik just announced a new version of their live video recording software for Windows Mobile phones, Qik 0.2.44, which adds a lot of new features. Top on the list is the addition of a feature that lets you send and receive video messages using the Contacts application on your phone. All you have to do is go to Contacts, press Menu, and select “Send Qik video message.” The message, once recorded, is sent as a SMS link.

Another new feature involves sharing your videos. Now you can share your recordings directly from the phone by going to “Options > Share.” You’ll then see a variety of sharing options, including sharing via SMS, email, or even upload to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and more.

The new version of Qik also allows you to upload video you had previously recorded on your device into Qik’s video-sharing service. So even if you’ve never used Qik before, you don’t have to wait to start using the service – you can just share video you already have available. Videos can be uploaded to qik.com and shared as described above.

Other improvement to this application include support for more languages (French, Russian, German, Italian, Spanish and Chinese were added) and a number of quality improvements like the ability to stream at higher frame rates even in low light.

That’s a lot of great features for a free software application! You can get the new version of Qik by visiting d.qik.com on your phone or, if already installed, just launch the app and wait for the upgrade prompt.

Bluetooth Access for the Windows Mobile Emulator

April 15, 2009 10:12 by gemery

The Windows Mobile Emulator, as the name suggests, allows you to emulate Windows Mobile (5, 6, 6.1) on your PC. This is especially helpful to developers but what about the rest of us? Well, maybe your old WinMo device can’t run cool new programs like the Last.fm player or the Iris web browser and you want to see if it’s worth buying a newer device that runs WinMo 5 or better. Sounds like a great reason to test drive a newer OS using Microsoft Device Emulator.

The Microsoft Device Emulator just got more useful by adding Bluetooth emulation as well! Have a look at the Bluetooth for Microsoft Device Emulator site. It shows how to install and configure all of the necessary components. This includes the FreeBT Bluetooth stack, which has to be installed on your hosting machine. But heads up — FreeBT is still in its alpha stage so if you’ve got any problems, be sure to check out their troubleshooting section.

Microsoft backs down on Marketplace Update charges

March 31, 2009 08:47 by gemery

As predicted, today’s Marketplace good news is that Microsoft would back down from their $99 update charge to Marketplace apps.

CNET’s Tom Krazit reports that in a major reversal now all updates or version upgrades for applications that have already been submitted to the store will be accepted free of charge. This applies to minor bug fixes as well as second-generation releases that add new features or capabilities.

Microsoft still plans to charge developers $99 a year, plus $99 per application, to submit applications to Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

On the second point of contention, we can report that Microsoft has still not decided internally whether Marketplace will eventually come to Windows Mobile 6.1 or not.

Read more about the $99 charge at CNET here.

Screenshots of the Windows Mobile Marketplace (App Store)

March 31, 2009 08:33 by gemery

At long last, we get a glimpse of how the Windows Mobile application store will look! They were buried in a pile of new WinMo 6.5 screenshot .
The opening screen of Marketplace seems to be a screen that allows you to choose among Most Popular, New apps, Categories, and so on. The OEM can choose to have their own suite of applications accessible from the main screen. This may be perfect for carrier-branded programs. You can also search right from the main screen.
Then, once you get into a category, you can get a finger-friendly view of the applications which will show you rating, number of ratings, price, and number of applications that with within each category.
We see that there many be a lot of free applications to choose from, such as one from CNBC business news, Fusion Voicemail plus, a Weather program, and so on. Of course, this is just an early glimpse of what will be available.
The interface looks clean and easy to use, but we really want to see what happens once you drill into any of the program screens and actually purchase/install the program. We also hope that the prices for apps don't stay as high as we're accustomed to now. For example, Spb Traveler 2.0 is shown at its usual price of around $30. It remains to be seen whether the Marketplace will force developers to lower their prices.
So what do you think? Is this a good start?

New Interfaces For Windows Mobile 6.5

March 23, 2009 19:56 by gemery

Yesterday we talked  about 8 Windows Mobile 6.5 that we didn't know before thanks to the MIX 09 conference. In this video, we demonstrate a few of them (courtesy of an XDA ROM for the Touch HD) such as the new non-honeycomb Start menu, the new waiting cursor (and props to 1800PocketPC for spotting this a while ago), improved physics with the kinetic scrolling, and an easier way to navigate the sliding-panel Today screen. It's nice to see the transition of Windows Mobile 6.5 into a more elegant product, especially if you compare it to what we've seen in the past.

Mix Recap – Windows Mobile 6.5 Update

March 23, 2009 09:15 by gemery

After the windows mobile session at MIX09 these are the key things that I gathered.

1. No more honeycomb - users didn't like it. The Start menu icons will still be aligned in a staggered grid, but they won't have the border.
2. The Zune-like Today screen can be navigated by sliding the selector...thus moving it up and down, or by sliding the background, thus keeping the selector stationary.
3. According to the presentation, the Marketplace will be launched in September or October.
4. Like the app store on the iPhone, the Marketplace will allow users to see apps by Featured, New, Most Popular, and Category (of which there are 13). Also, there will be a robust search.
5. Like the app store on the iPhone, updates are automatically issued for apps.
6. Like the app store on the iPhone (are you noticing a trend here?), users can rate and review all of the available applications.
7. Developers will have access to all of their uploaded apps through the "Developer Dashboard." Here they can see graphs of sales trends, plus they can add new apps with screenshots/descriptions/meta data.
8. Applications are subject to screening against 60 pieces of objective criteria to make sure that the submitted apps are not malware, and to ensure compatibility.
So, it looks like Microsoft is taking the Marketplace very seriously be insuring that the user gets a fantastic experience both with the Market place and the app itself. We're dying to see what this thing actually looks like (and at this point, it's not likely to be just a mobile-formatted website). Hopefully we'll get a glimpse of the UI soon!

P.S. A lot of the big name developers for Windows Mobile software are already getting access to the tools and (presumably) the Marketplace app itself. They are under NDA - Microsoft is trying to keep the Marketplace tightly clamped down until it's fully baked.
